yk-pao-songjiang-openingThe 23rd of October marked a new beginning for YK Pao School’s secondary division students, their families, and the school staff – moving into the brand new secondary campus in Songjiang to begin their lives as boarding school students.

The 70,000 square meter Songjiang Campus is equipped with everything the students will need, with a swimming pool, IT labs, and even a garden where students have the chance to grow their own food. A symbolic moment came when Director of Student Life Joe Elias and Academic Coordinator Daniel Legault presented the students with the keys to their dormitories. This was when students and parents could see that this campus wasn’t just a school – it will be their home away from home for the rest of their time as secondary school students.

The teachers were as excited as the students to arrive at the new school, which they will now call home as well. As boarding teachers, they will take on a number of very different roles during the day, not only teaching their own subjects, but running clubs and looking after students’ welfare in the evenings. The teaching team brings together a diverse group of individuals, including, for example, a member of the US National Ultimate Frisbee Team, an “ironman” triathlete and a professional jazz pianist, all with several years of teaching under their belts.

The leaders of the school gave welcoming addresses emphasizing the school’s unique character and their desire to create something new. Anna Sohmen, one of the school’s founders, emphasized that the boarding program at YK Pao School represents a new model for education in Shanghai, whilst Principal Tony Jaccaci described the school’s opening as the beginning of a voyage into uncharted territory, but there can be no doubt that wherever this journey leads, it’s going to be amazing.
