BISS Students Explore Authentic Beijing Hutong

On 23 May, a group of Beijing BISS International School (BISS) grade 8 students from Chinese classes visited one of the most vibrant Hutongs in Beijing, Nan Luo Gu Xiang.

The Hutong area around the Drum and Bell tower is one of the few authentic Hutongs still existing in modern Beijing. These Hutongs have a history dated back more than 700 years ago to the Mongol regime. A local expression goes "bell for the dawn, drum for the dusk.” People living in the Hutongs follow this routine generation after generation. Now this area is also a base for many artists, musicians and journalists.

In the excitement of experiencing the bustling Hutongs, BISS students first stopped by a small noodle shop near the entrance of Nan Luo Gu Xiang, Noodles to Noodles. Students ordered spicy noodles, Chao Shou (a special kind of dumplings) and drinks.

While exploring Nan Luo Gu Xiang, students were given missions to find out the specialty of some of the unique stores on the street. They also took the opportunity to try yummy snacks along the Hutong.

Visiting Nan Luo Gu Xiang gave the students a wonderful glimpse into Beijing’s ancient Hutong lifestyle.
