BISS Students Experience Silk Road Journey

On 25 April, the grade 3 students at Beijing BISS International School were sent off on the Silk Road to experience what life would have been like for the explorers of long ago.

Well, it was not really the Silk Road – but they participated in a simulation activity that had them going from city to city by trading goods and merchandise that would have been traded long ago.

Armed with goals in mind and specific tasks in groups of two, they reenacted the route along the Silk Road. From Xi’an to Rome they traded items and at each city experienced illness, hardship, and good fortune. Teachers at each city gave cards that represented the hardships one would have experienced. They were taxed in the hallway, forced to give up items because of bandits and treated to dried fruits and extra horses at the oasis.

Every student enjoyed the activity a lot. Their reflections at the end displayed their understanding: “Now I know lots about communities and how exploration has affected them over time,” reflected one student, Sneha. “Next time I would walk a bit faster and run away from the bandits,” said another student, Michael.

This activity will turn into their summative task where they will use the iPad app “Explain Everything” to document their journey through diary entries and images.
