BISS Puxi Students Take Part in Dragons’ Den Challenge

biss-puxi-dragons-den-1All Year 10 students at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi recently took part in a Dragons’ Den challenge over three days. This involved them working in teams to develop a product idea, conduct market research, produce a promotional television advert and poster campaign, and conduct some financial analysis before they pitched their ideas to a panel of three judges. 

The event came off the back of an arduous exam week for the students, but there was no evidence that this had taken its toll on their energy levels, as they jumped into the activity with huge enthusiasm. 

The groups started by brainstorming ideas for their new products or services, and the discussion within groups was fierce. Once they had decided on their product they allocated roles to each team member, utilizing all the skills within their teams. The technology experts were put in charge of the audio-visual elements. The mathematicians were charged with looking after the numbers. The creative-types took care of the marketing.

Two days of innovation then followed, with teams working collaboratively to finish the tasks in time. Each group member had their own role, but they also knew that they had to help each other out if their pitch was to be a success. Aniket Gocoldas, Head of Business Studies and Economics at BISS Puxi commented, “Watching the Year 10 students over the three days was a real inspiration. Considering that a lot of them do not study Business Studies at IGCSE level, it was impressive to see them really getting involved in the business discussions and bringing their team’s ideas to life in the pitches.”

The pitches took place on Friday afternoon when students watched each other present, before they were grilled by the dragons, a panel of Business Management and Economics teachers, the Head of Year 10 and Assistant Head of School. The dragons were eager to know that they had carefully thought through every element of their business ideas. In the run-up to the pitches, students nervously paced the corridors practicing their parts.  Fortunately, practice made perfect, as the pitches were expertly delivered and questions were confidently fielded. The standard was exceptionally high as teams competed for the ‘Best Television Advert’, ‘Most Creative Idea’ and ‘Best Pitch’ awards.

There were a huge variety of products pitched to the dragons including the Inkkorrect: a pen that spellchecks your hand written work for you; Lazeration, an educational lazer-tag game; Spready Bready, a knife which spreads toast and bread toppings though refillable capsules and Fitness4You: a watch that tracks the distance between a runner and their competitors ahead and behind them.

After the pitches, the dragons’ hard work then started, as they deliberated who would win which award. The event concluded with an awards ceremony where the trophies were presented. The participants were congratulated on the outstanding quality of the pitches that they had produced.  They demonstrated outstanding creativity, teamwork, commitment and presentation skills. And above all, they had a lot of fun along the way.
