biss-puxi-christmas-pantomime-aladdinYear 7, 8 and 9 students from the British International School Shanghai, Puxi Campus (BISS Puxi) delighted audiences with their Christmas pantomime, Aladdin.

Christmas pantomimes, very silly comic interpretations of traditional stories presented on stage, are a big part of Christmas in the UK. They are performed in every possible venue, from big city centre theatres to schools and village halls across the country.

BISS Puxi’s pantomime this year was Aladdin, the age-old story of a boy from a humble family who sets out to win the heart of a princess. The cast of young actors did an amazing job of entertaining the audience with jokes, horseplay, singing and dancing. The audience played their part too, joining in with everything from telling Aladdin that the skeletons were ‘behind you!!!’ to helping Abanazer to open the cave door.

The cast were amazing – their enthusiasm was almost overwhelming from the start of rehearsals and many of the best comic moments came from suggestions made by the students themselves in rehearsal. One of the time-honoured traditions of the panto is the ‘dame’, an older female character played by a male actor, with the entire comic potential that brings. A special mention should definitely go to Henry Barlow in Year 8, who carried off the role of ‘Widow Twanky’ with such style and panache!
