biss-news-photoStudents at Beijing BISS International School have been busy organizing and executing a series of fundraiser events to raise funds for relief efforts in the Philippines. The school has been abuzz with action in recent weeks!

A swirl of talent shined at the Philippines Christmas Benefit Concert. The eclectic mix of entertaining acts ranged from unique interpretations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, “boy band” renditions of Michael Jackson classics, interpretive dance performances by the Drama Department, female jazz duets, and an Australian teacher trio a cappella show.

Jail Time was a huge success as students gleefully donated money and locked up their friends and teachers for free photo opportunities. The corner of the courtyard was busy all week with as many as five people serving at a time in a purpose built jailhouse! Also in a fun spirit, ‘I Dare You’ caused a stir with students performing crazy antics all for the Philippines, daring teachers to dress up as Batman for the day and more.

In addition, the whole school community generously donated goods for the BISS Bazaar and Art Décor Sale and everyone enjoyed grabbing ‘new’ goods from stylish computer cases and T-shirts to designer drink bottles. Also popular on sales were homemade waffles, samosas, cookies, lolly bags, jungle juice and fairy floss, as well as colourful Christmas baubles.

To work off all the good homemade food, ‘Freeze Free Throw’ kept the competitive basketball boys accurate and focused each lunch break and ‘Band for Branding’ had the students tirelessly creating bracelets in the Philippines national colours as a mark of respect to the Filipino people.

This completely student-driven Philippines Appeal project culminated on 13 December, when both BISS Elementary and Secondary Schools combined for a major extravaganza. There were musical performances that involved all grade levels (Pre-K through G12), costume capers, budding chefs and entrepreneurs jockeying for key positions to entice hungry community members, and more!

To quote the student organizers, "Our goal is to raise and contribute as much as we can towards the relief effort in Philippines via UNICEF to make a difference. We want many families to be assured the basic human needs of clean water, food and shelter."
