biss-on-the-roadBeijing BISS International School (BISS) values the importance of inquiry- and field-based learning. The school is committed to the IB mission to “develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”

One of the highlights of the year is ‘BISS on the Road’, an annual week of activities completely unique to the school community, during which the classroom experience is taken out into the real world in order for students to actively engage with their community, make connections, reflect deeply on their chosen themes, and have fun at the same time. This year, BISS on the Road was another huge success both in the Elementary and Secondary Schools!

The Elementary School students stayed in Beijing, engaging in different activities relevant to their chosen themes. PreK-G1 students developed attitudes of curiosity, care, and cooperation as they made excursions into the local communities (“Friends Work Together”). G2 explored “Community & Chinese Culture” in their visits to Chinese temples, museums and cultural parks, as well as through their lessons in kung fu and traditional Chinese art. G3 students learned about the importance of “Health & Safety” first hand, and G4 students engaged themselves in “Challenge & Teamwork” through hiking and team building activities up the Great Wall. G5 students focused on “Leadership & Service,” culminating in an overnight camp in the traditional Huairou District.

In the Secondary School, G6 also experienced local Chinese culture while G7 tested their teamwork skills at Survival Island. G8 went on cultural excursions to the Miyun Mountains and Chengde, respectively, while G10 promoted environmental awareness through community service and leadership. G11 spearheaded renovations of local school facilities and taught young children at Gufupu, while G12 traveled to Pingyao for their Creativity, Action, and Service projects, making meaningful contributions to their local and global communities.

All the students came back from their week with a definite new glint in their eyes, having connected with their local Chinese communities and culture in a meaningful and significant way, while finding out a little bit more about both their classmates and themselves.
