The tournament has a sixteen-year history, and organizers annually invite elite students and teams from all over the world to participate. Only schools with official invitations are allowed to attend, and Beijing City International School (BCIS) has fortunately been invited to enter the competition.

This is the first time that BCIS has been invited to participate in the Harvard/MIT math tournament. The Harvard/MIT competition is run annually and is completely run and organized by Harvard/MIT engineering alumnus who love math and want to share their passion with the younger generation. The tournament itself brings in students from all over the world and usually has an average of 800 competitors, so it’s very challenging. These participants are the cream of the crop and are extremely mathematically strong.

Each school can send a team of six students to compete in the tournament. The students who will be representing BCIS at this tournament include: Jasmyne (Jingjing) Liu (Grade 10), Simon (Sixiong) Sheng (Grade 10), Minwoo Jung (Grade 10), Evita (Xiting) Xu (Grade 10), Sandy (Weisheng) Gao (Grade 10) and Logical (Siyuan) Yan (Grade 12).

In preparation for the tournament, students are given all of the past tournament questions, and they have been working through them carefully. They practice on their own and also as a team on Fridays after school.

Jing Jing (Jasmyne) Liu, one member of the BCIS team, is looking forward to the tournament: “I feel so excited about this tournament, but also feel stressed. There are over 800 students who will participate in the tournament from all over of world. Therefore, it’s a challenge for us. If we win, that’s a good thing for all students and teachers, however if we lose we will take away some experiences from the tournament. I trust myself and all the other partners. We will do our best in this tournament.”
