bcis-pta-cookingOne of the many traditional roles of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is to help create a sense of community among the parents within a school. BCIS is especially lucky that the PTA organizes many classes for the school’s parents to attend, including weekly classes in Chinese, English, Spanish and German, and also some monthly classes, one of which is the cooking class.

Since October 2014, the BCIS PTA has arranged for one parent to lead a special themed cooking class, where they teach other community members about preparing the traditional food of their home country or region. So far, attendees have learned about Chinese vegetarian food, Pakistani cuisine, Korean food, Italian pasta dishes, and in March will be learning about food from the Chinese seaport, Dalian. The classes have become so popular that in February a waiting list had to be implemented!

BCIS believes that bringing students, parents, teachers and other friends together in the spirit of sharing, good will and understanding is absolutely the best way to build a genuinely strong sense of community within the school. What better way to unite parents of a student body representing nearly 50 nationalities than through food and cooking – something we all need, regardless of nationality, race or creed.
