BCIS Hosts Debate Tournament

bcis-debateOn 22 March, 2014 international schools from Beijing, Tianjin, Nanjing and Suzhou met at Beijing City International School (BCIS) for a grand tournament of speech and debate for Middle and High School students. With over 200 students taking part in the various events of the day, it was one of the biggest competitions of its kind ever staged at BCIS.

The tournament was divided into different categories. Debates were split into novice and experienced and other events included impromptu speaking, original oratory, duet acting and oral interpretation (dramatic reading). The students and teachers all arrived at around 08:00 on Saturday morning, ready for a full day of speech and debate. After gathering in the school cafeteria and being briefed by the event’s chief coordinator, BCIS teacher Mark Lombardo, the students were ready to do battle!

BCIS teams achieved the following outstanding results:

Ellen Oscar and Yasmine Rayyis won 3rd place in MS Duet Acting; Ellen Oscar and Jaap Deinum won 1st place in MS Debate Novice; Steven Liu and Hwan Choi won 2nd place in MS Debate Novice Sidd Gupta won 2nd place in MS Original Oratory; Sidd Gupta and Yasmine Rayyis won 1st place in MS Debate Experienced.

All the BCIS students should be warmly congratulated for their tremendous efforts in the competition.
