bcis-mathsweekFrom 9 to 13 September, Beijing City International School (BCIS) held its annual Maths Week. Besides regular maths classes, activities and open-ended problem-solving in class, other BCIS teachers were asked to conduct an activity in their classes to showcase the various ways we all use maths in everyday lives.

For example, students played games that required them to use problem solving, strategy, reasoning and other maths skills. They also had the opportunity watch a game of soccer and tally and graph statistics to recognize trends. All the games and activities provided opportunities for students to strengthen maths skill sets and make connections with various aspects of their learning.

BCIS Elementary School Mathematics Team Leader Erin Breheny said:

“At BCIS we have a strong philosophy about all teaching and learning. Maths Week was a chance to showcase and celebrate the many ways that maths plays an important part in our everyday lives. It was great to hear students’ recognition of themselves as mathematicians, and to learn something about themselves and the world around them in a meaningful and mathematical way.”
