bcis_ecc_art_exhibition-6As the Early Childhood Center (ECC) of Beijing City International School (BCIS) finished their “Amazing April” celebration, they also inaugurated their “Magnificent May”! Parents and students were treated to an amazing spectacle as they attended the “Happiness Gallery”, held at its beautiful fourth floor space. This special exhibition of visual arts was set up as a charity project, and was coordinated by the ECC’s teachers and students. Artwork from all grades was present at the gallery, with parents even having the opportunity to participate in an auction to purchase some of the works and contribute to a good cause.

All the money raised – more than 44,000 RMB – went to the BCIS charity, Help a Child Smile. This charity raises money for orphan children in need of cleft lip and palate surgeries as part of their journey to adoption by a foster family. The children’s support for the charity inspired theme of “happiness”. The event gave ECC learners the opportunity to reflect on the orphans helped by the Help a Child Smile charity, with the realisation that for these children, the simple joy of smiling was something they were not able to enjoy in the same way. The art show also served as a way of empowering these young learners to take action and offer their help to the children so that one day they, too, can enjoy smiles and laughter in the same way that they do.

The event was a wonderful exercise in compassion, altruism and thoughtfulness on the part of the students. It was also a great way for students to share their learning, creativity and development with their parents. A range of exhibitions that showcased the children’s skills were on display, and the students did well to make the event a great success, which around 200 parents came to enjoy.
