During March 15th – 19th, Yew Chung International School of Qingdao (YCIS Qingdao) Primary and Secondary students were submerged in the world of art; their time was carefully divided to permit direct demonstration and practical experience with Hong Kong’s Artist in Residence, Ms. Emily.ycisqd-artist-s

One project carried out on the YCIS Qingdao Campus was to transform a staircase into a tunnel aquarium, inspired by a recent field trip to Qingdao’s Polar Ocean. The youngest students set to work creating 3D sea creatures. Using recycled items, newspaper and wire mesh, each pair or small group built a paper-mache creation to feature in the aquarium. The theme travelled through all Primary classes both in Qingdao and Huangdao Campuses. The chance to work collaboratively and imaginatively concluded with a wonderful collection comprised of seahorses, fish, sharks, dolphin, shells, octopus, starfish and more.

Emily’s artistic enthusiasm was felt avidly as she guided and praised the students’ details. As the paper-mache dried and paints were applied to the 3D objects, they came to life.

For the YCIS Secondary students a chance to glean instruction from an artist and practice true sketching skills was irresistible. Emily quickly observed the beautiful coastline of Qingdao upon her visit and was inspired to take the Secondary students out with sketching boards, paper and pencils. Emily instructed the young budding artists to look honestly at what they saw, judging the scale in relationship with other objects and shapes around them to create inspired sketches. .

The results on paper were remarkable. Tentative brushstrokes nervously began, giving way to more confident gliding of the brush.
