Arts Interdisciplinary Unit Day Takes Place at BCIS

bcis_ss_idu_artsday-202 June was a day dedicated to the arts for Beijing City International School (BCIS) Secondary School students – it was the Arts Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) Day! The entire school was turned into both a canvas and a stage as students played, acted and danced their way through an amazing series of performances, all of which came under the theme “Lost and Found.” All the performances of this year’s IDU Day were inspired by the work of renowned illustrator, artist and storyteller, Shaun Tan.

And what a day it was! Kicking off the show at 10:15 was Grade 6 with their kinetic drawing performance, bringing together elements of visual arts and dance movement to put on a unique performance. Following that was a morning of drama and music in the theatre, with three plays: “The Red Tree” by Grade 6, “Amnesia” by Grade 7, and “The Rabbits” by Grade 8. With artistic appetites whetted by these stellar performances, students then led a visual arts exhibition for all students in Grades 6 to 9. But this was no ordinary exhibition: it was an interactive, maze-like self-guided tour that showcased the artwork inspired by four of Shaun Tan’s novels.

The festivities continued into the afternoon with Grade 9’s short play, “Arrival” and a music performance, “The Arrivals Lounge.” Even those with no artistic disposition couldn’t help but be mesmerised by the artistic feats accomplished by the students that day. What’s more, the Arts IDU was put together in a relatively short space of time, so the students’ ability to accomplish so much demonstrated the power of collaboration and school spirit when it comes to getting the job done. They truly did a fantastic job.
