rbis-earth-day-s2Rainbow Bridge International School, in cooperation with Changning Administration Headquarter for the World Expo and Shanghai Zoo, are giving voice to the environmental movement by hosting an Earth Day festival on Saturday April 23rd, 2011 in the Shanghai Zoo.

Over 2000 children and their families representing 31 countries participated in the Earth Day activities including environmental education activities such as seed planting and designing fashion from recycled materials. Participants also took part in stage performances, family games, charity activities, and tour cultural villages that highlight environmental initiatives from around the world as well as activities that immerse visitors in cultural traditions.

Shanghai Earth Day aims to educate the community about the human impact on the environment and it also serves as a reminder that it is never too late to start making small steps each day to have a positive influence on the future of our environment.

The theme of Shanghai Earth Day 2011 is “Sustainable Earth: Ensuring Today’s Resources Endures for Tomorrow’s Youth”. In the wake of the Shanghai World Expo, Shanghai’s Earth Day celebration provides the perfect opportunity to promote a global community effort towards environmental awareness and encourages people, corporations, and governments to join together and create sustainable solutions for our daily needs.

Earth Day organizer and RBIS principal, Rebecca Zipprich, believes that if everybody in Shanghai worked together as a community, then we would all be breathing the benefits.

“Making small steps to better our environment is something we all can do, even the smallest of students here at RBIS are learning to bring reusable bags, use less plastic and recycle their paper and bottles. Those are lessons which will carry into their adult life and help make this a cleaner planet,” says Zipprich.

Rainbow Bridge International School has hosted Earth Day in the Shanghai Zoo since 2006 as part of its green initiative. Earth Day enables RBIS students to contribute to environmental projects, promotes resourceful thinking and behavior, and kindles children’s understanding of environmental studies, civic responsibility, and our global community.
