As part of their goal to weave their school values into every aspect of Kindergarten life, Angels International Bilingual Kindergarten in association with the Shanghai Beautiful Mind Charitable Foundation is proud to announce the launch of its Housing Renovation Project.

Using funds raised through various fundraising initiatives over the past twelve months, along with support from Shanghai Beautiful Mind, Angels will spearhead an endeavor whereby 26 less privileged families across the greater Shanghai area will receive upwards of RMB 30,000 each to renovate their homes.

“Despite Shanghai’s rapid development over the past two decades, there are still people out there in need of help,” says Angels Principal Yoko Su. “Some households have three generations living under the same roof in an area no bigger than 15 square meters. They need support.”

Along with the obvious monetary provision, the project will also see assistance provided by way of the Angels Parent Teacher Association, where expertise in interior design, construction, renovation and restoration as well as material contributions from those who own companies or factories in the field and labor, to make this vision a reality.

To really drive the overarching core values home, Angels will also provide opportunities for its students to become part of the project so that they may see first-hand the meaning of compassion and generosity. Principal Yoko Su says this was the fundamental reason for choosing a base close to home as opposed to other regions of China.

“We have worked with other organizations in different regions before, such as building libraries for schools in lower income areas, however it can be difficult for our little Angels to travel to these places due to a variety of constraints,” Su says. “Teaming up with Beautiful Mind means we can not only use their knowledge and understanding of the field, but incorporate our students and families into the project more intricately. It teaches our students to not only appreciate what they have and what their families have done for them, but to support others who are in need. This is one of our core values here at Angels.”

The Angels Housing Renovation Project was launched on 17 September, and the renovation has already gotten underway, with eight houses being completed or nearly completed already. Su says the response from the wider community has been enormous, far beyond expectations and she expects the project to be nothing short of a success.
