3e-speaker-news3e International School welcomed two guest speakers from the US for the PD day on 21 November 2014.

Kay Nicholas, former principal of a Michigan Elementary School, provided 3e teachers with a three-hour workshop on conscious discipline, for which she is a certified trainer. Conscious discipline, an award-winning classroom management program created by Dr. Becky Bailey, presents a comprehensive set of brain-research supported skills to foster children’s positive behavior in a family-like classroom environment.

Throughout the workshop, Nicholas highlighted that to move beyond power struggles with children, adults need to see their misbehavior as a cry for love, and to support them with love for helpful choices. Specific classroom setups, breathing exercises, and scripts were suggested to help children enhance self-regulation and independence, such as to create a safe place in the classroom, use the “I notice that…” phrase to encourage description instead of judgment, and be assertive with directions. Nicholas also analyzed several challenging behaviors that teachers have recently been facing in the classroom for effective support strategies.

Sophia Garner, the other speaker, is a teacher experienced in implementing reader’s workshops with her lower Elementary students. She shared her training at Teachers College, Columbia University, with 3e’s K-4 teaching team, including both expatriate and Chinese teachers.

Both speakers immersed themselves in 3e classrooms for several days afterwards to facilitate implementation. This was the third time for Nicholas to work with 3e teachers on conscious discipline, and it was the first China visit for Garner. Both were amazed by 3e teachers’ high commitment to dual immersion education and teamwork culture. They look forward to their return next academic year.
